Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld says that he would love to see Ryan Reynolds reprise his role as Green Lantern. Before he made himself known as the Merc with a Mouth, the actor first tried to headline a superhero franchise by playing the DC character. Unfortunately, unlike his Marvel stint, his time as Hal Jordan wasn’t as well-received, making it only a one-time thing.
Although Reynolds has fully moved on from this part of his career, he’s very open when it comes to talking about it. So despite Reynolds finding success playing his comic book creation, Liefeld is convinced that fans would love to see Reynolds play Green Lantern again.
Taking it to his official Twitter account, Liefeld revealed that he would actually be thrilled to see Reynolds reprise his role as Green Lantern. While the comic book writer didn’t get into specifics on how he wants this done, he said that he’s confident that it will be positively received by the public. Fans are split regarding his comments considering how the actor’s first venture in playing the DC role, but some agreed with Leifeld especially if they give Reynolds the creative control on how he wants to tackle the character this time.
At this point, it’s safe to say that the only way to see Reynolds as Green Lantern is through a comedic sketch that pokes fun at his former role as the DC hero. While both Deadpool movies didn’t shy away in highlighting the fact that the actor previously played the character, it would be quite difficult for him to actually don the green costume again and seriously take on the role. Even if they wanted to do a short bit in the Deadpool franchise considering that it’s able to break the fourth wall, there’s a slim chance that Warner Bros. or DC actually agrees for their IP to be used in another film - especially a Marvel production. Further, a brand new project centering on the said DC character/s is in the works.
Even if Reynolds plans on donning the Green Lantern suit just for fun in his future standalone and X-Force films, what’s curious is whether or not it’ll get the approval from Marvel Studios. One of the most debated aspects of the in-process Disney and Fox buyout is the mystery regarding how the Deadpool franchise will be integrated into the existing MCU lore overseen by Kevin Feige. It’s no secret that over at Fox, Reynolds and his team pretty much have total creative control over the films, but many are convinced that it will change once it joins Marvel Studios. Fans will just have to wait how things pan out with the sale said to be finally going to be official by next month.
