In the Freeform series Grown-ish’s sophomore season, we see the group go through many changes. After a summer away and a new year full of challenges ahead, audiences were excited to see where this season will take this Cal U friend group.
With new relationships brewing, friendships evolving, and course loads getting harder, this group is in for a ride. Despite the renewal of the second season, according to IMDb the first’s rating wasn’t great. Let’s see how IMDb users felt about this season.
Worst: Tweakin’ (Season 2, Episode 15) - Rating 6.8
After weeks of hooking up and hanging out Ana and Aaron’s relationship has hit its defining point.
With mixed signals all around Ana is left wondering whether or not she and Aaron are in a relationship. After consoling with the girls and him with the guys, it is made clear that it’s time for them to define the relationship. After talking and realizing that they both have different expectations and wants they come to the realization that it’s time for them to stop whatever they are doing.
Best: Mind Playing Tricks On Me (Season 2, Episode 20) - Rating 7.6
Aaron hosts the first-ever Black Minds Matter Gala for the students at Cal U.
When Zoey finds out that her boyfriend’s favorite artist Joey Badass will be in attendance she tries to convince him to strike up a conversation. Due to Lucas’ reluctance and Zoey’s need to metal she ends up trying to convince him to converse with Luca. Out of nowhere, Joey ends up offering Zoey a job that she can’t refuse. Being forced to inform Luca about her opportunity, things take a turn for the worse as Luca becomes upset and credits the job offer to Zoey’s looks only.
Worst: Self Care (Season 2, Episode 16) - Rating 6.7
For Martin Luther King Jr. weekend Zoey decides to take the girls back home with her for a few days of relaxation, rejuvenation, and overall self-care.
While away the girls are all dealing with their problems while also keeping parts of their lives secret from one another. with Junior trying to get Jazz’s attention and the girls not connecting with one another’s self-care rituals the weekend starts on a low note. Later on, the girls start to open up regarding relationships and the struggles that they’re facing. But when Nomi dropped the bomb that she’s dating her professor all that’s where off.
Best: Girls Like You (Season 2, Episode 11) - Rating 7.6
With Nomi continuously having one-night stands in the apartment, it leaves Ana and Zoey to confront her about her behavior. After hearing this Nomi starts to re-evaluate herself and how she treats women.
Meanwhile, Ana, Aaron and the rest of the gang decide to go out and try to accomplish items off of their bucket list. Whether that be shotgunning a beer or singing karaoke. After the group’s long night of fun, Aaron walks Ana back to her apartment and the two share kiss. Shocking audiences because of their political views and dislike of one another in the past this was something no one’s not coming.
Worst: In My Feelings (Season 2, Episode 4) - Rating 6.6
While working on a project for her fashion course Zoey feels frustrated when coming up with a design. Having a boyfriend who designing comes easy to just makes matters worse. In the end, after a lot of soul-searching, Zoey realizes that fashion design probably isn’t the major for her and leaves on a hunt for a new path.
After the misunderstanding in the New Rules episode, Zoey and Jazz still aren’t in a good place. Making their interactions in this episode oh so uncomfortable. While trying to deal with her own issues she confides in the other girls but is still trying to make amends with Jazz. After Jazz confronts Zoey about feeling hurt things don’t go back to normal but they definitely take a positive step forward.
Best: Only Human (Season 2, Episode 19) - Rating 7.7
Mental health in the black community is something that is ignored and often never talked about. After one of his residents attempts suicide, Aaron decides it’s time to create a space where students have the opportunity and feel comfortable to talk about their mental health.
Topics ranging from loneliness, family expectation, Mental Health in the media and everything in between are discussed. Having this necessary discussion allowed for multiple perspectives to shine through. Tackling topics such as this isn’t easy especially in underrepresented communities. Outside of this discussion, audiences were surprised by a cameo from Jordyn Woods.
Worst: Nothing Was The Same (Season 2, Episode 2) - Rating 6.6
After a summer apart Zoey and Luca are trying to get back into the groove of being together.
While they’re readjusting Zoey compares her relationship to that of Jazz and Doug. trying to overcompensate or her insecurities she tries to maze their relationship seemed perfect to others instead of working on it together. In the process, Zoey further alienates herself from Lucca making it harder for them to connect. Later on, after realizing that they’re used to communicating over the phone, Zoey uses it to find harmony with her boyfriend once again.
Best: Workin’ Me (Season 2, Episode 8) - Rating 7.7
Trying to gain more experience and styling, Zoe decides to help the twins amp up their Instagram game.
Knowing that sex sells, Jazz is willing to use her sexuality to benefit her brand. In doing so it makes her boyfriend, Doug, uncomfortable. Leading to a discussion about her image in the public eye and how she wants to be perceived. Having a hard time finding a happy medium the two end up at odds. Toward the end of the episode Jazz and Zoe find a way to showcase Jesse’s personality and love for track without feeling like her posts over-sexualize herself.
Worst: New Rules (Season 2, Episode 3) - Rating 6.3
Living in an era where technology is always near, rules have changed when it comes to dating, friendships and everything in between. In this episode, audiences get a first-hand look at how Zoey and her friends follow their rules in each situation.
But Zoey didn’t anticipate encountering a situation that is uncharted territory. When seeing her Jazz’s boyfriend at a co-ed party alone, Zoey looked to the others for help regarding what to do. Unfortunately, this backfired on Zoey resulting in issues between her and Jazz.
Best: Face The World (Season 2, Episode 11) - Rating 8.0
In this episode, we see Zoey have to take responsibility for her recent actions.
After cheating on her Final exam after a night of partying Zoey faces the consequences by academic and familial standards. Dre and Pops come to visit Zoey on family weekend, only to find out that she hasn’t been making the best choices. Seeing how she’s changed and obviously not for the better Dre decides to cut Zoey off completely. No money, no car, just her basic needs being met. Leaving Zoey to think about how her decisions are impacting her life.
