The Guardians of the Galaxy favorite Drax the Destroyer found a unique way to use an Infinity Stone in the pages of Infinity Countdown #3. To defeat an army of aliens, Drax plays a saxophone with its music amplified by the Power Stone.

While the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Black Panther battle Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Comics is busy having an ‘Infinity’ event of their own. In Infinity Countdown, the heroes of the Marvel Universe have to stop a crazier-than-ever version of Ultron from assembling the six Infinity Stones. But even with Adam Warlock back in Marvel’s Universe, the odds aren’t looking good for the Guardians.

On the comics side of things, Drax actually quit the Guardians of the Galaxy, but reunites with the team on the planet Xitaung fighting an army of Chitauri and the Raptors, led by Nova’s brother. The Guardians’ job? To stop these enemies from claiming a seriously oversized Power Stone. In Infinity Countdown #3, the heroes are forced to accept that they will break before the opposition. At Star-Lord’s insistence that they go out like warriors, Drax agrees to play one last tune on his saxophone.

The music impresses even their Chitauri enemies… but the best is yet to come. After Star-Lord manages to obtain the Power Stone in a scaled-down, easy to carry size, he has an idea. Tossing it into the sax, he tells his friend to “play it again, Drax.” As Drax blows on the saxophone, purple energy from the Power Stone radiates all around him and overwhelms the Chitauri. A deadly groove, on a whole new level.

Using a saxophone and an Infinity Stone is a special moment for Drax, considering that the character is the Guardians’ strongest—and arguably one of its most violent—members. However, it’s not necessarily out of character for the hero. Fans who aren’t familiar with Drax’s comic book history may not be aware that Drax is actually a talented saxophone player. Before Drax was a green alien monster with a grudge against Thanos, he was the real estate agent Arthur Douglas with a fondness for the brass instrument. After his death, his consciousness was transferred to an alien body.

In the 1990s, when Drax had a child-like personality akin to the Hulk, he rediscovered his love for jazz music and began playing the sax again. Drax has entertained both himself and his fellow Guardians with his sax playing a few times in the years that have followed. With music being a big part of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, it’s possible that this aspect of the character could be explored in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - although seeing a cosmically-weaponized saxophone in the MCU may be a stretch, even for the Guardians.

But who knows? Through Star-Lord’s Zune, Drax could gain an appreciation for jazz, at least.
