Marvel Studios is closing in on two months until the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and anticipation continues to rise. The first film was a surprise hit for many, with the wild space adventure lead by obscure characters escaping the confines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. For the sequel, director James Gunn looks to have pushed the boundaries once again. Not only is the core group back together, but this time they will also see Mantis, Yondu, and former nemesis Nebula join the ranks of the Guardians.
The marketing campaign so far has only give glimpses of the newly expanded team together in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, though the newest Guardians 2 trailer also unveils the first look at Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet (aka. Star-Lord’s dad in the MCU) in humanoid form. With Ego now having been at least partially unveiled, Marvel Studios is apparently comfortable with not showing anything else major from the sequel before it hits theaters.
Gunn confirmed on Twitter that the latest Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer is also the final theatrical trailer for the movie. This is not surprising, given that the film is rapidly approaching its release date. However, this doesn’t mean that there won’t be any new Guardians 2 footage revealed between now and when the sequel hits theaters. There may be no more trailers hereon out, but Marvel has a tendency to release clips and countless TV spots to promote its MCU films - and that will almost certainly prove to be the case again, with the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.
After three trailers, it seems like this is the perfect time to shut down trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The marketing so far has shown very little anyway, with the focus more so being on the characters rather than the plot - as Disney is confident the desire is high for the sequel. Throughout all the footage shown, only a handful of scenes have actually been glimpsed, leaving the possibility for bigger surprises and scenes to come in the theater.
There has so far been very little focus on Ego and it would be rather surprising if he did not play a critical role in the film. Unless the subsequent and smaller pieces of marketing are Ego-centric, the heroic divide between father and son may not be seen until the film itself. Some of this potential conflict could spill over into the main story, which once again is family-focused. The new trailer has Peter saying, “Sometimes, the thing you’ve been searching for your whole life, its right there by your side all along,” and Gunn said something very similar on the Doctor Strange Blu-ray. Peter could be caught between trying to have a connection with his father and staying his new “family,” but it looks like fans will have to wait until the movie is out to see what it all means.
