Marvel is all set for a spectacular year at the cinema. After debuting in Captain America: Civil War, Spidey will finally be getting his own solo film set in the MCU when Spider-Man: Homecoming premieres this summer. Following that, the Hulk will be joining the God of Thunder in space for the intergalactic roadtrip that will be Thor: Ragnarok. Before then, however, all eyes are on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the follow-up to Marvel’s massively successful cosmic romp.
We’ve learned a lot about the film so far, and recently got our best look yet at Kurt Russell’s version of Ego. We’ve also seen plenty of images from the film, found out that Rob Zombie will play a role, and learned how the relationship will play out between Star-Lord and his father. Most exciting of all, we’ve discovered that a full trailer for the film will finally be dropping tomorrow on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Now, to build up anticipation for the release, Marvel has dropped a teaser for the trailer. Check it out above for a taste of the comedic dynamic we’ll see on display when the film lands this May.
Though quite brief, the quick teaser does what the Guardians franchise has always done best: not take itself too seriously. One of the highlights of the first film was when all of the characters stood up, announcing they were all going to unite to protect the universe. The triumphant moment was imediately undercut by Rocket making a joke about the situation, allowing the film to have its cake and eat it too.
Marvel has always managed to mix epic action and world-ending stakes with plenty of pathos and humor. Almost every one of their films has a moment like this, where they introduce a trope and turn it on its head. Even on TV, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. does this on a regular basis, keeping the audience guessing at every turn. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn recently said that not all the footage from the teasers would make it into the film, in order to keep things fresh. That could very well be the case with this campfire scene. Then again, the chance to just sit around with the Guardians while they get disgusted by Drax’s eating habits is something we’d love to see more of in the movie.
While we’re still months away from the film’s release, there’s still plenty to remain excited about. The trailer tomorrow should give us our best look yet at the plot and characters of the film. Marvel and Hasbro also recently released a massive line of new toys, with many highlighting Guardians from the movies and comics. The toys may also hint towards some future possibilities, as the cosmos is the limit with this franchise. Stay tuned and we’ll have the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer for you as soon as it premieres tomorrow.
