James Gunn teases a death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After getting fired by Disney last year from his post at Marvel Studios following the emergence of some of his unsavory social media posts from a decade ago, the director is back to his old job, helming the much-anticipated threequel. He’s currently busy with DC’s The Suicide Squad first, which is already in production. Once that’s done, Gunn will be back in more familiar territory. While that may take a bit of waiting for fans of the cosmic ragtag of heroes, the filmmaker already knows what will happen in their next adventure, having finished the script awhile back.
Prior to being ousted from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn revealed on social media that the story for the flick was already done. Even during the debacle, word was that Marvel Studios would still use the script he wrote despite getting a different helmer. That means, that despite the extended wait for its release, the cosmic heroes’ next adventure is already more or less set. And if Gunn’s recent interaction with a fan is any indication, viewers should get themselves ready for a possible tearful goodbye.
During a question and answer session over on his Instagram account (via Digital Spy), a follower asked Gunn if someone will die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director obviously can’t spill any narrative detail, so instead, he skated his way around the question saying: “I can’t remember ANY comic book film where someone didn’t die.” Since it’s via Gunn’s stories, it’s unknown what kind of reaction this answer got from his fans. Nevertheless, it has started a discussion about the possibility of a Guardian biting the bullet in their next big screen appearance.
Gunn is correct, there hasn’t been a comic book film where no one died. And while fans minds quickly went to a prominent character, the director’s statement also holds true when talking about the lives lost of those affected by the usual climactic battle in these kinds of flicks. It can even be the villain, which was typically the case in Marvel Studios projects. So it’s safe to not get too worried that a fan-favorite hero will meet his demise just based on Gunn’s recent interaction on social media.
All that being said, Gunn is known to deliver emotional moments in his movies. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may not be as well-received as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, but one would be hard pressed to find someone who wasn’t at least affected by Yondu’s (Michael Rooker) death. The adult Groot’s supposed death was also emotional despite him essentially being reincarnated as baby Groot. With that precedent, there’s still a chance that the public might say goodbye to a beloved hero in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and all everyone can hope is that his/her death is a fitting send off for the character.
