UPDATE 4: The Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer is all but confirmed to debut on Monday, February 5, with a TV spot at the Super Bowl before. Here’s when we think the trailer will release.
UPDATE 3: The latest rumors suggest the Solo trailer will debut on Wednesday, January 24 ahead of Maze Runner: The Death Cure’s theatrical premiere.
UPDATE 2: As of January 19, there is no official word on a Solo trailer. Footage recently screened at a German film event that has stoked excitement for a trailer, which is likely set in the couple of weeks. At present, it’s expected to arrive with or before Black Panther. In reaction to the increasing wait, a Twitter account has been made keeping track of the lack of development:
UPDATE 1: A trailer was rumored for January 12 on Good Morning America, which has since been disproven. However, a first teaser has to drop soon, so expect it on GMA in the next few weeks. The original article follows.
When will the Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer drop? The release of the first teaser trailer for a new Star Wars movie is always a major event, and it looks like in the case of the Han Solo standalone film we’ll be getting it sooner rather than later.
Of course, there’s still another Star Wars movie to release in theaters before attention turns to the Ron Howard’s prequel: Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. For Disney-era Star Wars thus far, we’ve not been asking these questions until the prior release has been wrapped up; the last film is typically out on home video before the marketing for the next begins. However, Solo’s very different; whereas The Force Awakens, Rogue One and The Last Jedi were all a year apart, each releasing in December, it arrives on May 25, 2018. That’s right, the next Star Wars movie is little over five months away (and at this point, that won’t change), yet we haven’t seen any official footage.
So, a trailer can’t be far off. Avengers: Infinity War just dropped its after a long build-up, and that’s out only a few weeks earlier on May 4, 2018. The big question is if we’ll get a trailer before/with The Last Jedi (so, in the next week) or after (presumably early-to-mid January). Lucasfilm have - as per - been keeping this close to their chest, but if we don’t get any indication by the end of the week, it’s evidently going to be after The Last Jedi’s release. But when exactly?
There is still a very outside chance of it coming with The Last Jedi. The poster turning up in theaters signals the start of a marketing campaign, and we do already know that a trailer has been edited for months now. While Star Wars teasers haven’t come with Star Wars films in the past, there’s less chance of Solo hurting The Last Jedi than there was Episode VIII dampening Rogue One hype or even the spinoff distracting from grand return The Force Awakens - The Last Jedi is a mammoth event whereas Solo a more modest prospect (especially after all the director drama) - and there’s no better prospective audience for the Star Wars Story than, well, Star Wars fans.
However, as things haven’t started yet, it may be too late; The Last Jedi is a little over a week out so any closer would be a distraction. And, frankly, waiting a couple of weeks is negligible, especially when brand hype is at fever-pitch. In fact, holding back allows Lucasfilm to tentatively test if simply releasing a Star Wars film without the extended lead-in for mainstream audiences can work; Star Wars sells itself, so Han Solo will have a franchise boost whenever it begins marketing. With that in mind, January looks like a fair bet.
But when in January? We can make an educated guess. Lucasfilm tends to release trailers at big events or during TV shows on Disney-owned networks: Good Morning America on ABC or Monday Night Football on ESPN. There’s no Celebration next year, so that leaves it playing on one of the latter two. GMA could be literally any day, whereas the most likely MNF contender is January 8, 2018; the college football championship game will be televised on ESPN, which is one of the strongest opportunities in the near future.
Whenever the Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer does drop, Lucasfilm are sure to quickly build up the hype with teasers and other announcements. Stay tuned for more.
